Ibstock accelerates towards the goal of Net-Zero Carbon

The UK group has achieved another goal in its sustainability roadmap with the use of 100% energy from renewable sources

As of 1 January 2021, Ibstock plc has become the first building products manufacturer in the UK to procure 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. This milestone announcement enables Ibstock to take significant steps towards its Sustainability Roadmap target of a 15% reduction in CO2 per tonne of production by 2025.

The green energy generation mix is typically 75% wind, 24.69% solar and 0.31% hydro/wave power. This switch to renewable electricity is the latest in a series of decarbonisation projects Ibstock has invested in, including the completion of a solar park – the first of its kind in the brick industry – at the Group’s Leicestershire head office to supply 20-30% of the power requirement on site. The company is also continuing to play its part in the reduction of reliance on fossil fuels through the installation of electric vehicle charging infrastructure across several sites.

Ibstock’s targets for 2025 also include zero waste, 40% less use of plastic in packaging, and 5% water savings per ton of product.

Ibstock Brick operates 21 production plants with 1,500 employees and has a portfolio of 450 different product types.
